There are only seven bones in a giraffe’s neck, despite the length of its neck. Seven neck vertebrae are the same number in all mammals, including humans. A giraffe undergoes a lengthening of the cervical vertebrae after birth, resulting in a long neck without the need for more bones. Each vertebra can be over ten inches long! Unlike humans, though, the vertebrae are connected with a ball and socket joint, providing giraffes with a 360-degree range of motion.
