New York City has two major league baseball teams – the New York Mets and the New York Yankees. The Yankees, from the American League, began playing in New York in 1903. The New York Mets, representing the National League, was formed in 1962. At one time, three major league teams called New York City home. The New York Yankees joined the Brooklyn Dodgers, who began in 1884 and relocated as the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1957. The New York Gothams began in 1883, changed their name to the New York Giants two years later, and became the San Francisco Giants in 1958.
