A chef’s hat traditionally has 100 pleats, signifying the 100 ways he or she knows how to make eggs. A single pleat could also represent a single, unique recipe mastered by the chef. Legend has it that chefs began to wear hats when Henry VIII found a hair in his soup and beheaded the chef. The new chef was instructed to wear a hat, so he didn’t suffer the same fate. The traditional white chef’s hat signified cleanliness from the chef himself and his kitchen. Soon, everyone in the kitchen wore hats and the height of the hat designated the experience of the chef. The higher the hat, the more experienced the chef.
