By the late 1940s, the carhop service was common at drive-up restaurants, so in 1947, the first drive-thru appeared for those who wanted their food to go. The first drive-thru appeared in Springfield, Missouri, on Route 66 at Red’s Giant Hamburg. Red’s was a popular restaurant until it closed in 1984. The original In-N Out Burger opened in 1948 in the Los Angeles area and still operates today as the longest-running burger drive-thru. The Jack in the Box fast-food chain opened in 1951, focusing on providing drive-thru service to its customers. The original restaurants were drive-thru only but soon offered limited sitting at its locations. McDonald’s, believe it or not, did not have a drive-thru until 1975.
