Indigenous Peoples Day is associated with Columbus Day. A presidential proclamation was signed by President Joe Biden on October 8, 2021 declaring Indigenous Peoples a national holiday. The day celebrates and honors Native American, their history and culture. The holiday began as a counter-celebration to Columbus Day, which many note as the beginning of the violent history of colonization in the Western Hemisphere. The initial celebration of Indigenous Peoples day began in 1992 in Berkley, California, marking the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ arrival in the Bahamas. In 2014, many cities and states adopted the holiday. South Dakota began it’s celebration of Native American day in 1989, on the same date.
