Allspice is dried and ground Pimenta dioic, a berry of an evergreen tree in the myrtle family. The tree is actually classified as a shrub, but some species are cultivated as a large canopy shade tree, with coffee trees planted under them. Native to Jamaica, Honduras, and Guatemala, the tree is now cultivated across the world. Historical evidence suggests Christopher Columbus discovered this spice during his exploration in the Caribbean and brought it back to Spain. The flavors of Pimenta dioic are of cinnamon, nutmeg, pepper, and cloves, giving it the name ‘allspice.’ Allspice is popular in Caribbean and especially Jamaican cuisine. It is wildly popular to flavor desserts.
