A tittle is a small distinguishing mark, most commonly found on an i or j in the American language, but appears in many other languages. The word itself is not widely used. It is interesting to note, though, that the tittle has contributed to widely used phrases in the English language. The term “to a T” was used in place of “to a tittle” to mean “exactly, precisely, and perfectly.” ” To dot one’s i’s and cross one’s t’s” or apply the tittles means to put on the finishing touches or be completely thorough.
