Nuuk, Greenland is the northern-most capital in the world, at 64 degrees 11 minutes North latitude. It is located only a few kilometers further north than the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. Nuuk is the largest city in Greenland, with a third of Greenland’s population living within its limits. Its population is just over 18,000 people. Nuuk was founded in 1728 by missionary Hans Egede, and it was the first settlement in the country. Ninety percent of Greenlanders are Inuit, and they utilize the Danish krone as their currency. Greenland, despite its name, is mostly covered in ice. There are no roads between towns, and transportation consists of air traffic, boats, snowmobiles, and dogsleds.
