The durian holds the title of the world’s most fragrant fruit, but not in a good way. People who like the fruit describe it as a delightful, sweet fruitiness. Others liken it to “rotten eggs, sweaty socks, wet garbage, and a slight sweetness” or ” rotten onions, turpentine, and raw sewage.” The small is so fragrant, the durian is often banned in hotels and restaurants, as the scent can linger for days. It is also not cheap, costing upwards of $50 per fruit because the tree it grows on doesn’t bear fruit for 15 years. Despite its smell, it has a devoted following of durian lovers. It can be eaten raw but is also used in making candy, ice cream, and soups. The fruit is the size of a volleyball and needs to be cracked open to reach the “edible” fleshy center. Bon appetite!
