Only 1% of earth’s water is easily accessible and drinkable. While almost 70% of the planet is covered by water, most is saltwater in the oceans or saline-based. From that 1%, much of that “easily accessible” water is contained in glaciers and snow, leaving only 0.007 percent of the water on the planet for drinking water. Those of us with access to free tap water often overlook its value to us, using this precious commodity for long baths and showers, watering lawns, and filling swimming pools. Some developing nations frequently face drought and environmental pollution, limiting access to water or requiring laborious work or money to obtain significant quantities for health and safety. The next time you enjoy a cold bottled artesian, mineral or sparkling water, take a moment to appreciate your good fortune.
